If you weren’t in Ghana or anywhere near Africa in 2017, you missed a lot. Ghana was the most craziest and exciting place to be in 2017, particularly the music sector. And I’m so excited you are curious to know what happened.
The most popular artistes in Ghana in the year 2017 recorded massive hit songs from across all kinds of artistes in a very unique but different genres across the country.
Most of these popular artistes in Ghana are very talented but rather new crop of artistes and musicians who are trying harder to cement their positions in the Ghanaian music scene with longevity and consistency.
This is very inspiring and strongly assures the enviable future of the Ghanaian music industry but only time will tell how ambitious they could be. I have put together below with statistics ‘The most popular artistes in Ghana’
1. Patapaa (Patapeezy)
Award winner and One Corner hit maker, Justice Amoah popularly known in showbiz circles as Patapaa undoubtedly was the most popular artiste in Ghana and beyond Africa with his onetime classic hit dubbed “One Corner” in the year 2017.
“ONE CORNER” was released somewhere in April/May in the central region of Ghana a town called swedru.
The “ONE CORNER” song traveled across the length and breadth of the Country within some few weeks after making massive trends in the central region.
It was the biggest hit in Africa and the diaspora and Patapaa’s name was being mentioned all over the place as he plays shows across Africa.
He won the 3music viral song of the year award and the Ghana DJ most popular song of the year wards. As famous as he is now he is still trending and charging for featuring.
2. Shatta wale
Africa’s undisputable and incontestable dancehall King and multiple award winning Ghanaian dancehall act, Charles Nii Armah Mensah known in showbiz circles as Shatta Wale as we always know breaks and sets new status quo day in and day out.
We would have no crucial excuse should he not be placed here on our second spot.
“Taking Over”, ”FORGETTI” and “Freedom” were his massive hit songs in 2017. “TAKING OVER” on which he featured his Militants was one of the biggest songs in Ghana, Africa and beyond. “TAKING OVER” received massive airplays and telecasts and topped all musical charts in Ghana for about 1month without a dip. Yes it was his first come back after 3 years being denied nominations at the VGMA’s and he won the best collaboration at his comeback in the year 2017.
3. Kuami Eugene
VGMA’s 2017 new artiste and Highlife artiste of the year, Kuami Eugene also under lynx entertainment emerged superiorly promising the year under review.
Kuami Eugene released about five (5) hit songs but the major hit out of the five was a song he dubbed “Angela”. “Angela” was the banger in town from September 2017 through to December maintaining its relevance. This greased his hands with two (2) tangible awards at the 2017 VGMA’s.
VGMA’s 2017 Highlife song winner of the year, Kidi under lynx entertainment did massively well in 2017.
Kidi dropped “SAY YOU LOVE ME” at the start of the year which caught up with the ladies and went on the same tangent but this time around it was a smash banger dubbed” ODO” which means love. “ODO” in 2017 was one of the biggest songs in Ghana and Africa.
This rewarded him a collaboration with Davido and Mayorkun on “ODO” remix and went to win VGMA’s highlife song of the year. he was also one of the popular artistes in Ghana of the year 2017
5. Kwesi Arthur
B.E.T nominee and hip-hop rap artiste Kwesi Arthur took our number 5 spot.
Later in 2017 November, Kwesi Arthur featured Sarkodie and Medikal on his “GRIND DAY” remix and that awesomely blew up in the skies across the country.
6. Fancy Gadam
Award winning Ghanaian hiplife artiste, Fancy Gadam secured our sixth position and I think is well deserved.
Fancy came all the way from the North and blew up just like that like an atomic bomb in Afghanistan being shared for merry.
Fancy Gadam started all this when he started parking arena’s in the northern region and came down to the south(Accra) and even filled the national theater, bukom boxing arena and every ghetto in the zongo community.
He is rated as one the best performers in the country. He won the VGMA’s most popular song and hiplife song of the year award 2017. His massive hit song “TOTAL CHEAT” topped charts in 2017 and also won two awards.
B.E.T award winner and (four) 4 times in a row Raggae/Dancehall artiste of the year, Stonebwoy spotted very busily in 2017. The bhim nation president as we always know puts up his “A” game anytime he is on a song. His stage performance is just great.
Stonbwoy released unique hit songs like “BAWASABA” , “MY NAME”,”DEDE” , “COME FROM FAR” and many others. He went on to release an album dubbed “EPISTLES OF MAMA” which also topped charts on the billboards, Itunes, apple music, aftown and other solid digital music platforms.
He won the VGMA’s Raggae/dancehall artiste of the year 2017. In fact we were looking forward to seeing him win a second B.E.T award but it didn’t happen. We hoping for next year.
8. King Promise
Legacy Life entertainment artiste, King Promise who is an Afropop singer and songwriter, did massively well, the year under review, from which he came out with songs like “OH YEAH”, “SELFISH” and got featured on vision DJ’s massive hit dubbed “double trouble”.
His song “OH YEAH” topped musical charts and was No.4 on the list of most played songs on air (radio).
Later in the year 2017, “SELFISH” took him to a different pedestal as King promise keeps playing shows in Ghana and Europe even till now. He got about five (5) nominations in the 2017 VGMA’s.
9. Kofi Kinaata
Former High grade family signee, Kofi Kinaata cemented our 8th position.
VGMA’s Twice in a row award winning Ghanaian best song writer and twice in a row highlife artiste of the year, Kofi Kinaata did exceptionally well and had his songs banging all over the place.
He released songs like “PLAY”,”SINGLE AND FREE”,”LAST SHOW” and others which were topping charts back in 2017 and up till now “PLAY” is still on the Ghanaian music charts enjoying very massive airplay all over the country and abroad.
He got featured on captain planet’s hit song dubbed” OBI AGYE OBI GIRL” which was also a banger.
Sarkodie couldn’t started but could not get off the list as his songs keep banging all over and across Africa. Sarkodie started the year with “Gboza” and went on to release an album titled “THE HIGHEST” which was second on the Itunes chart and 7th on the Apple music chart.
Undoubtedly every hit song in Ghana had Sarkodie’s presence built in there. Talk of Fancy Gadam’s “total cheat” vision Dj’s “Double trouble”, B4bonah’s “Dear God” and lastly Kwesi Arthur’s “Grind day” remix.
He won the VGMA’s hipife/hippop artiste of the year and VGMA’s rapper of the year all in 2017.
