In times past, we have had a high-streaming team of highlife musicians who have impacted our lives through their music, and even though they are not in good standing as it stands, their songs still inspire and get us on our feet anytime it’s being played.
Arguments happening recently on social media and in our traditional media space is getting hotter and interesting as highlife music fans and entertainment pundits debate which artiste truly rocks highlife better and deserves to be crowned a highlife king.
The two main artistes debaters are staking on with their mouths are Kuami Eugene and Kofi Kinaata. These two outstanding acts since their breakthrough onto the Ghanaian music scene have been tremendous throughout, win a magnificent number of fans in and across Ghana and people severely appreciate their craft.
But one thing for sure, ‘Your favourite may not be another person’s favourite’ and it’s always important you respect other peoples opinion at least for what they prefer based on their own reasons. No matter what you do people will always have their favourites when it comes to music or entertainment in its entirety.
At least, I believe a few of you here witnessed Kuami Eugene being crowned the highlife king at the 2018 Vodafone Ghana music awards which have been the genesis of this whole high-life king brouhaha and are still on the lips of many Ghanaian music lovers. This argument seems unending. However, we have to draw a few lines between both artistes to level the playing field.
A little career background in retrospect on Kuami Eugene and Kofi Kinaata:
In relation to the issue on the table of discussion, Kuami Eugene started music as a high-life artiste, and about 90% of the songs he’s dropped since his career kick-started are all highlife rated songs. Although some of his songs have been judged by industry folks as not a proper high-life, the lynx entertainment artiste has a convincing number of highlife songs with great listeners always glued and anticipating more from the Rockstar.
Kuami Eugene has won the VGMA highlife artiste of the year for 3 consecutive times. Crowning all his ratings, Highlife legend, Amakye Dede was tasked to Crown Kuami Eugene ‘highlife king’ of the younger generation at the 2018 VGMA awards night.
Kofi Kinaata ‘Team move’ on the other hand, is a Rapper. He began music as a hardcore rapper, arguably one of the best mc’s in the country, but switched to highlife in late 2014 and had his first hit and highlife song ‘Susuka’ in 2015. The former high grader has since been massaging our ears with good highlife tunes and has won for himself thousands of fans in and across Ghana. His recent high-life hit song ‘Things fall apart’ skyrocketed his ratings making fans believe he deserves to be crowned the ‘highlife king’. He’s a one-time VGMA highlife artiste of the year.
Judging from their respective musical backgrounds and popularity, I think both artists are fantastic acts and kings in their own way. They are all loved and being patronized by Ghanaians.
However, fans will always have their favourite and who they want to crown as their king. So who are you crowning the highlife king, Kofi Kinaata or Kuami Eugene?
Ghanaians lock horns over who truly deserves to be crowned high-life King. The contest is between Kuami Eugene and Kofi Kinaata
